Our Free Range Farms

Rangitikei Chickens are Free Range.

For the first few weeks of life, Rangitikei chickens are raised in a large barn, in conditions similar to what a nesting hen would provide; the right amount of warmth, humidity, feed and water. It is at this stage that the chickens are most susceptible to disease and environmental conditions so it's especially important they are protected and cared for.

When the chickens reach 18-21 days of age, the barn doors are opened during daylight hours to provide them access to a grassed area where they are free to roam and forage during daylight hours.

As well as lots of fresh air, our Rangitikei chickens also enjoy a longer growth cycle and less density in bird numbers inside the barn. The free range lifestyle is the recipe for fresh from the farm, top quality chickens

Rangitikei chickens are fed a combination of grains, minerals and vitamins to ensure the birds receive a nutritionally balanced diet.

This balanced diet ensures that the birds remain healthy, and do not experience deficiencies of proteins, vitamins, or minerals.

The free ranging, the natural rate of growth and their feed contribute to enhancing the flavour and taste of Rangitikei Free Range chicken.

Rangitikei Free Range Chicken farms are all independently audited so Rangitikei chickens are happy and healthy chickens.

All of our Rangitikei farms are independently audited to ensure they meet or exceed the requirements of the New Zealand Animal Code of Welfare. Annual audits along with spot audits guarantee to consumers that the products they are purchasing have been humanely farmed from 'paddock to plate'.

This means that any of our farms can be independently checked at any time by a third party auditor, and it also means that we can ensure that all Rangitikei free range farms meet or exceed these audited standards.
By using this process, it means that when you buy Rangitikei products you can be assured that the utmost care has been taken to ensure we have raised happy and healthy chickens.

Rangitikei believes that following the “Five Freedoms” principles of animal welfare is a standard their farmers will honour every single day. "Our farmers are really proud of their work in providing the chickens a better standard of welfare. Everyone at Rangitikei farms sees this as an un-breakable promise to our chickens, our consumers and the NZ community, that we will work hard to excel in these standards every single day."
